One of the most highly anticipated flowers to come into season in the floral calendar, daffodils are known for their soft sunny petals and colourful trumpet surround. Typically associated with spring, the cheerful blooms actually start their season in winter. Growing until early spring, the yellow beauties are available from June through to October.

Commercially cultivated since as far back as the 16th century, we’re spoilt for choice in New Zealand, with daffodil varieties unique to Godzone including single, double or ruffled petals and a stunning palette of yellow, pink, cream or orange. Pick the hue to suit your mood!

To keep your daffodils in top condition, when the daffodil stems are cut they emit a kind of sap that can be harmful to other flowers. Soak the cut daffodil flowers alone in water overnight and then rinse the stems before arranging them with other flowers.

Daffodils can last up to 4-6 days in a vase with proper care. Follow these steps to get the best out of your florals:

  • Half-fill a clean vase with room temperature water and mix in flower food.
  • Start by removing any leaves that will be below the waterline.
  • Trim 1-2 cm off the Pieris foliage stems at an angled cut and arrange into the vase.
  • Trim 1-2cm off the daffodil stems at an angle cut and arrange into the Pieris foliage.
  • Change the water as daffodils will release sap into the water and recut the stems every two days
  • Place your arrangement into a cool space, avoiding direct sunlight, fruit bowls and hot rooms.

  • 15 stems daffodils
  • 5 stems Pieris foliage
  • 1 packet flower food
