Meet Roger Allen and his daughter Vania, from Eastoveden based in Whakamarama, Tauranga. They have been growing cut flowers in Tauranga for the last 20+ years.
Eastoveden (pronounced East-of-Eden) is a Hydrangea grower, that supplies the New Zealand domestic market and exports 80% of their crop overseas.
Growing a wide variety of different colours of hydrangeas, Eastoveden is a leading hydrangea producer and Roger himself has been responsible for breeding many unique hydrangea varieties currently sold on the NZ market.
Roger starting the business with his wife during the 1980s, and in the past 10 years his daughter Vania has slowly taken over the growing operation with her husband and young son.
Eastoveden produces hydrangeas from November to May, with only a five-month gap in supply starting from June to October. Hydrangeas are their main growing crop, however, in the winter months, they grow white king proteas and erica which is supplied to the local markets.
Hydrangeas are hardy, long-lasting product and have the vase life of 2 weeks. They make for a beautiful centrepiece and a popular wedding choice for many brides during the spring and summer months.
