How To Care For Tulips

Let's celebrate tulips!

Be charmed by NZ grown tulips and indulge yourself with these carefully selected blooms. Tulips are a soft stemmed flower and that can have a slightly curved stem. This is caused by phototropism which is the tulip's natural response to light. Tulips will continue to grow 2 - 5cm once cut. Tulips are available in New Zealand from April to December.

Did you know that tulips are the world’s third most popular flower? In the 1600s, tulips became so widely popular in the Netherlands and caused a phenomenon called 'Tulip Mania'. Tulip bulbs quickly became a luxurious commodity and traded for extraordinary sums of money, the market then unexpectedly collapsed and 'Tulip Mania' became the first example of an economic bubble.

How To Care For Your Tulips

Tulips last between 5 to 7 days with proper care. Follow these steps to ensure the best vase life of your tulips:Fill 1/3 of a supportive vase with room temperature water and add flower food.

  1. Fill 1/3 of a supportive vase with room temperature water and mix in flower food.
  2. Trim 1cm off the little gem magnolia foliage at an angled cut and arrange into vase.
  3. Remove any tulip leaves that will be below the water line.
  4. Trim 2cm off the tulip stems at an angled cut and arrange into the foliage.
  5. Change the water every two to three days and be sure to re-cut the stems.
  6. Place your arrangement in a cool space, avoiding direct sunlight, fruit bowls and hot rooms.

Droopy tulips? Make sure your tulips are trimmed to the size of your vase and are well supported. Tulips are soft stemmed and will droop if the water level is too high.
