June Flower Of The Month - Carnations

Carnations are back in fashion and we couldn't be happier! Its no surprise as the Carnation has beautiful, uniquely textured and bright coloured petals - perfect for any showstopping bouquets.

Dianthus caryophyllus is the Latin name for Carnations and translates to "flower of love" or "flower of the gods". Dating back to Roman and Greek times, the Carnation is one of the world's oldest cultivated flowers and was used in art and decor.

Proving to be a timeless classic, the carnation remains a favourite flower and in the 20th century became the official flower of Mother's Day. Each coloured Carnation carries different symbolism and meaning, such as white carnations represent purity and luck, pink represents gratitude and dark red represents love, passion, and affection.

If you've recently received or giving Carnations, follow these steps:

1) Use a very clean vase

2) When cutting the stems, cut them under water. Only remove 1 to 2cm off the stems

3) Carnations are susceptible to stem rot - do not overfill the vase

4) Add flower food to your vase, change the water every two days and re-cut the stems.

Remember to keep Carnations away from any direct sunlight or fruit as this will shorten their lifespan.
